If you know little or nothing about the subject, like many younger people, this may seem a " cool movie". Just as an action pic, you're right. However, what I miss, is the ideological context in which all this was happening.
There is some mention of sectarian leftist groups, we see major mass protests of university students, etc. And the starting scenes in Berlin visit of Sjah are the main " background" to the " movement".
I even remember first spouse Soraya from the early 60's What I miss, is , an explanation of what and how on the mass student meetings, they are just shown.
Also missing are the deeper context of postwar BRD Germany not having come to terms with the Nazi past, especially in the situation of many former NSDAP - symp's having high places in society, government, industry, etc.

Immediately afterwards the gang's car is stolen and Baader rails against the Italian thief. The film does, however, have a hero, Horst Herold, the real-life chief of the Federal German police, a more refined and sympathetic version of Inspector Heat, the London policeman in Conrad's The Secret Agent.
Herold superbly played by Bruno Ganz, who impersonated Hitler in Downfall uses his professional skills to destroy the gang, and his role ends in effect when they're arrested.
It's Herold who appreciates that terrorism can be combated only by understanding the minds of the terrorists and their numerous sympathisers, appreciating the nature of their discontent and seeing how society can change to defuse their anger and frustration.
Mohnhaupt then abducts industrialist Hanns-Martin Schleyer and demands the release of her imprisoned comrades in exchange for not killing him.
The hijacking ends with the plane being stormed and the hostages saved. In Stammheim, Baader warns a West German Government negotiator that the violence will continue to escalate.
Ensslin makes the same prediction to the prison chaplain and claims that the West German Government is about to murder her and her imprisoned comrades.
The following morning, corrections officers find Baader and Raspe shot to death in their cells as the handguns Mohnhaupt smuggled into the prison lie nearby.
Ensslin is found hanging from the steel bars of the window. They also find Irmgard Möller stabbed four times in the chest, but still alive.
When the news reaches the free RAF members, they are devastated and certain that the trio was murdered. To their shock, Mohnhaupt explains that Baader, Ensslin, Möller, and Raspe "are not victims and never were".
She explains, that they, like Meinhof, were "in control of the outcome until the very end". Stop thinking that they were different than they were.
