Love this movie, saw it when it came out in , haven't seen it since, it's never on TV, the stores don't carry it, and we all know what that means--time for Amazon, where you can find anything you little heart desires and more!
It's hard not to get carried away. The Fall is one of the most underrated movies, a simple, beautiful story about a silent movie stuntman named Roy Lee Pace, who is gorgeous!
He starts telling her a compelling story that just holds her attention--and then he stops. He won't continue unless she does something for him: steal morphine from the pharmacy.
She doesn't want to but is desperate to hear the rest of the story and does his bidding. The more spaced out he gets on morphine, the more vivid her imagination.
The story is from Roy's lips but what the viewer sees is Alexandria's imagination. Anyway, I'm so glad I have my copy. It's worth every penny. Being utterly seduced by its visually stunning beauty, 5 stars is mandatory for that alone.
I've never seen any comparable movie. Adding in superb acting, an unpredictable story, and wonderfully recreated s period scenes is icing on the cake.
No wonder it took so many years to make. To me the long list of rave reviews are, if anything, understated. Rather than offer another echo, I'll list here some minor caveats regarding the many Blu-ray options.
The budget version as of early which I bought was made for German audiences, and playback worked fine on my low-end 4K Samsung player.
I don't read German, and the menu options which are vast had to be probed hit-or-miss to find the English sound track. Subtitles will be likely necessary since much plot-crucial dialogue is in the slurred diction of a young child, and in this version the default font is in expansive block letters, and to toggle them on or off requires a return to the set-up menu.
There may be a font option beyond my monolingual reach. There's apparently a director's voice-over version lurking somewhere in the menu stack, but I haven't searched for it.
Visually beautiful, of course. The "reality" bits between Roy and Alexandria are sweet, and it's a bit shocking when you see how callously he uses her and her love for him.
It's a well-made movie, and not much cgi according to Tarsem Singh, just enough to clean up some images, remove modern things like electric poles from the scenery.
Left me feeling sad, though. Yes, yes, I know they are fictional characters, but the story is still sad and isn't that part of a good movie anyway?
That you care about the characters? Lee Pace is beautiful in this film, and so is little Catinca Untaru. A mesmerizing, beautiful, unique, indescribable fantasy drama about the power of friendship and imagination.
I won't go too much into the plot, as this has been discussed plenty elsewhere. But in essence, a crippled man befriends a young girl and tells her a fantastical story.
Half of the film consists of this fantasy story as it plays out in the girls head. As the film goes along, the mans ulterior motives become more apparent, and the girl goes from passive listener to co-storyteller.
A coming of age drama like you've never seen before. The actress who plays the young girl is phenomenal.
The back and forth between the two leads is completely enrapturing, and it is often easy to forget that these aren't real people having real interactions.
As for the fantasy story, it is as beautiful as anything ever put to film. The film was shot on location over 8 years with minimal CGI, and boy does it show.
But why do you care about the fantasy story, you ask? It is very much intertwined with thre main drama, and both stories complement and play off one another.
Both stories combine in spectacular fashion to create an emotional, dark, and gripping tale about the power of friendship, imagination, and the value of storytelling.
Anchored by two Oscar worthy lead performances and accompanied by some of the most beautiful cinematography you'll ever see Give this one a chance.
This film was amazingly beautiful in its filming, funny, sad, and so human. The little girl steals the show but the rest of the casting and choreography is brilliant.
Creatively interpreted symbolism, fantastic fantasy story. It was delightful from beginning to end - The young girl who has tragically lost her father, falls in love with a new father figure and helps him to become whole as well.
I can't believe I never heard of this film and am watching it for the first time only now. I just watched this movie the second time in 48 hours, which I never do.
My wife talked me into watching this and I am glad she did. It is visually stunning. One of the most beautiful and visually rich movies I have ever seen.
Please try again later. I don't understand why there are so few reviews. This is a riveting psychological crime series.
I glanced at it several times on Prime and passed. I think perhaps the title is not a great draw. I finally decided to see what it was about and very glad I did.
The UK and European crime shows are the best, and this is up there with the most memorable. I'm just beginning Season 3, but decided to leave my review on Season 1 for new potential viewers.
There is one thing about this production that is different and really surprised me. I realized that there is a sense of realism about the story because it didn't have continuous music.
Only at certain scenes did background music subtly appear. But the majority of the production had none. In real life, we don't have constant background music influencing our senses and emotions.
So the lack of music in this series drew me into the story more deeply without that distraction. That's also a testament to the quality of talent. I found it mesmerizing.
Be careful A friend recommended this series to me and I'm glad she did. I had watched the first episode but then gave up; somehow it failed to engage me initially.
But my friend nudged, so I persisted, and I'm glad I did. It's a very very dark series, even for a serial killer story.
I found the violence more difficult to take in this versus other similar series, especially in season 3 - I think it's because of how it is filmed, but I'm not truly certain.
All I know is that it is disturbing. You probably shouldn't binge-watch it, but take it in parts because it can become overwhelming.
But if this is your genre, The Fall is one of the better efforts out there. Gillian Anderson is fantastic as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, a truly multi-faceted female character.
When Anderson is on screen, it is impossible not to be riveted by her. By the end of the series, Anderson and the writers have created a fully realized character, which so many series fail to do well if at all especially if that character is female.
Anderson and Stella are the real deal. Jamie Dornan is a very gifted actor playing a complex killer. He will later come to fame for portraying Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, but don't let that put you off!
Feminists like myself will have a lot to chew on - not just with the two main characters but with characters on the perimeter of the story as well.
Men seem to want to possess Stella. I can not recommend this film any more strongly. Looking for some great streaming picks? Check out some of the IMDb editors' favorites movies and shows to round out your Watchlist.
