But once this happens it is impossible to pull the bottom of rope back out of the event horizon, since if the rope is pulled taut, the forces along the rope increase without bound as they approach the event horizon and at some point the rope must break.
Furthermore, the break must occur not at the event horizon, but at a point where the second observer can observe it.
Assuming that the possible apparent horizon is far inside the event horizon, or there is none, observers crossing a black hole event horizon would not actually see or feel anything special happen at that moment.
In terms of visual appearance, observers who fall into the hole perceive the eventual apparent horizon as a black impermeable area enclosing the singularity.
Increasing tidal forces are also locally noticeable effects, as a function of the mass of the black hole.
In realistic stellar black holes , spaghettification occurs early: tidal forces tear materials apart well before the event horizon. However, in supermassive black holes , which are found in centers of galaxies, spaghettification occurs inside the event horizon.
A human astronaut would survive the fall through an event horizon only in a black hole with a mass of approximately 10, solar masses or greater.
A cosmic event horizon is commonly accepted as a real event horizon, whereas the description of a local black hole event horizon given by general relativity is found to be incomplete and controversial.
At present, it is expected by the Hawking radiation mechanism that the primary impact of quantum effects is for event horizons to possess a temperature and so emit radiation.
For black holes , this manifests as Hawking radiation , and the larger question of how the black hole possesses a temperature is part of the topic of black hole thermodynamics.
For accelerating particles, this manifests as the Unruh effect , which causes space around the particle to appear to be filled with matter and radiation.
According to the controversial black hole firewall hypothesis, matter falling into a black hole would be burned to a crisp by a high energy "firewall" at the event horizon.
An alternative is provided by the complementarity principle , according to which, in the chart of the far observer, infalling matter is thermalized at the horizon and reemitted as Hawking radiation, while in the chart of an infalling observer matter continues undisturbed through the inner region and is destroyed at the singularity.
This hypothesis does not violate the no-cloning theorem as there is a single copy of the information according to any given observer.
Black hole complementarity is actually suggested by the scaling laws of strings approaching the event horizon, suggesting that in the Schwarzschild chart they stretch to cover the horizon and thermalize into a Planck length -thick membrane.
A complete description of local event horizons generated by gravity is expected to, at minimum, require a theory of quantum gravity. One such candidate theory is M-theory.
Another such candidate theory is loop quantum gravity. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. For other uses, see Event horizon disambiguation and Horizon general relativity.

General Relativity: An introduction for physicists. Black holes. Top reviews from the United States.
There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. Verified Purchase. In this movie, a person is exposed to the vacuum of space for about a minute and survives.
The general consensus among many reviewers is that this is inaccurate. On the contrary, however, if you expel the air from your lungs before exposure to vacuum, you'll likely survive but with potential injuries.
So, this movie's portrayal of space exposure is actually quite accurate! This is the main reason I decided to write a review, I feel the need to hopefully get others to realize this is not a problem in the movie.
Certain animal studies in the 60's by NASA exposed dogs and chimpanzees to near-vacuum for 90 seconds up to 5 minutes with surprising results.
I recommend reading about them. I knew a little bit about the story and I wish I hadn't - would've made it that much better! I still highly enjoyed it, however; one of the best sci-fi flicks I've seen in a very long time!
And this was the first time I've ever seen it. You will likely be spooked and, if not, at least a little disturbed by this movie.
But in a good way. WTF did I just watch? Hellraiser In Space! The year is and Dr. He has just gotten word of a distress beacon being sent from the spacecraft Event Horizon in orbit around Neptune.
He designed the spacecraft and its unique time-and-space-bending engine core gravity drive and sent it on its way seven years ago.
Then he lost contact with it and it was assumed all aboard were dead in some tragic accident. They are even less pleased when they get to the Event Horizon and seriously messed up things start happening.
Apparently, this engine core gravity drive has opened a gateway to Hell, and each member of the crew is faced with their greatest fears. Random Thoughts: Sam Neil should not have been allowed to run around shirtless.
Nobody wants to see that. The weapons they choose are knives or saws. For the most part the design of the space ship and various props was pretty darn good, but there were several consoles and a scanning device that looked embarrassingly dated and cheap.
The design of the core gravity drive was spectacular. This one is wonderfully true. Most space thriller and horror movies are extremely cheesy. Instead of the woman saying "I'll go back in the crazy room of Satan", this movie has a real reaction: "I'll do what needs to be done, but I will not go back near that room".
Like any smart person would do. I really liked it, and have seen it a few times. Even knowing what comes next, it still holds it's own. Early entry by Paul W.
Cooper, having used his space suit's oxygen supply to propel himself back to the ship, appears at the bridge window.
Weir shoots at him and is blown into space by the ensuing decompression. Miller, Starck, and Cooper survive and manage to seal off the ship's bridge.
With their own ship destroyed, Miller plans to split the Event Horizon in two and use the forward section of the ship as a lifeboat.
He is attacked by manifestations of Corrick which turns out to be the resurrected Dr. Miller fights them off and detonates the explosives, sacrificing himself.
The gravity drive activates, pulling the ship's stern section into a black hole. Starck and Cooper enter stasis beside a comatose Justin, and wait to be rescued.
Seventy-two days later, the wreckage of the Event Horizon is boarded by a rescue party, who discover the remaining crew still in stasis.
Starck sees Weir posing as one of the rescuers and screams in terror; this is revealed to be a nightmare with Starck waking up moments later.
Cooper and the rescue team comfort the newly-awakened and terrified Starck as the bulkheads close. Anderson was inundated with screenplay offers, as well as the opportunity to direct the Mortal Kombat sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation , [10] and the upcoming X-Men Anderson had in mind a "classic haunted house movie", incorporating significant influences to moderately successful horror films such as Robert Wise 's The Haunting and Kubrick 's The Shining because they enforce suspense from the unknown, meaning the ghost or creature was hidden from the viewer, and their endings induced ambiguities of perception in the audience.
Screenwriter Philip Eisner acknowledged Warhammer 40, as a major inspiration for the plot. Many fans of Warhammer 40, consider Event Horizon to be an unofficial prequel to the former, when humankind discovers the Warp and learns of its dangers the hard way.
As Anderson explains, directors usually have a standard week editing period to produce the first cut of a film, as guaranteed by the Directors Guild of America.
However, due to the short production schedule of the film, the rapidly approaching release date, and the fact that principal photography had not yet finished, Anderson agreed with the Paramount studio to an editing period of six weeks and promised to deliver the film by August , as Paramount wanted to have a hit film before Titanic's planned September release date.
When the main unit wrapped, Anderson was supposed to start editing the film, but he still had to shoot two weeks with the second unit , effectively shortening the time he could spend in post-production to just four weeks.
In that short amount of time, only a rough cut of the film could be assembled. Anderson notes that at two hours and 10 minutes, it was overly long, with weak directing and acting that could have used another editing pass, unfinished special effects, and a poor sound mix.
In test screenings , the cut was poorly received. There were complaints about the extreme amount of gore, [7] and Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt claim members of the test audience fainted during the screening.
Anderson believes that while his first cut was justifiably considered too long, Paramount forced him to make a cut that was instead too short, and that the film would benefit by the restoration of around 10 minutes of footage, including some of the deleted gore.
After the initial DVD release became a surprise hit, the studio and Anderson became interested in assembling a director's cut , but they quickly discovered that the excised footage had not been carefully stored and much of it had gone missing.
The plan to assemble a director's cut was abandoned and instead a special-edition two-DVD set was released, featuring one deleted scene, two extended scenes, and a few shots of deleted material in the included making-of featurette.
The footage is of " video " quality. The "bloody orgy" video was also longer. As Anderson was sometimes too busy filming other scenes, second-unit director Vadim Jean filmed some parts of this scene.
The film's final ending was a combination of two unused alternate endings that were filmed. One did not have a jump scare at the end when the last two survivors are found by another rescue crew and Starck hallucinates that she sees Weir, although there was a similar version of the scene included in this ending where she hears screams of Event Horizon crew and screams in fear before Cooper wakes her up.
This was the original ending of the film included in the shooting script. He responded "never", explaining that much of it is gone forever.
Anderson said that after finishing Resident Evil: Retribution , he planned to watch it for the first time since assembling the film.
Asked about the VHS tape, he said neither he, nor Levin, had watched it yet, as Levin moved to Spain; however, he was still excited about watching it at some point.
Michael Kamen was hired to compose the score for the film. Director Paul W. Anderson , a fan of hybrid genre music, invited the electronic dance music duo Orbital to collaborate with Kamen and to provide synthesizing sounds for the film's unsettling atmosphere.
A soundtrack album was released which edited various cues from the score into four tracks of approximately ten minutes.
Event Horizon was released on August 15, and was a box office failure. Roger Ebert gave the film two stars out of four, noting the opening portion as being particularly well-crafted, and commended its atmosphere.
However, Ebert went on to state that the film never managed to become the intense, thought-provoking experience it wanted to be.
The film had some early supporters, with Empire magazine awarding Event Horizon a 3 out of 5 stars rating, reporting: "That the film never fulfils its promise is down to its over reliance on horror vagaries in a precision-built sci-fi milieu, ultimately leaving too many unanswered queries.
A sharper script and a more credible solution could have turned this impressive hokum into a force to be reckoned with". There are certainly plenty of jumps on offer as a possessed ship torments and tortures any humans it can find.
Well worth a look.

The film itself has a good story to it, a fair mix of horror, action and sci-fi. Worth mentioning in an off topic manner, that this film would make a good reference in term of the Warhammer 40, universe, for someone looking to have an idea of the perils of Warp travel.
Worth watching. Absolutely superb film and would be 5 stars no question but there is great footage cut from this version. I had to look on youtube after watching to see the best bits that are cut from the film.
Not a bad syfy horror movie that has shown it's age by getting the predicted dates wrong for a moon base. One of a kind blast from the past!
One person found this helpful. I like the idea of making this a haunted house in space rather than having recognisable creatures doing their thing with the human space travellers.
As the director says in the interview section of the extras disc. The only complaint is that the film should have been twice as long, to give the stories events more time to develop.
As it stands events appear rather rushed. But then budgets had to be worked to. The sequences with the wife of Sam Neil's character are truly haunting.
Its also slightly reminiscent of Hellraiser 2 in that a main character fully embraces Hell. Back to top. Get to Know Us.

Although Justin snaps out of his trance, the ejection procedure cannot be stopped. The airlock opens and Justin is expelled into space.
Captain Miller, who was overseeing the repairs outside, arrives in a space suit just in time to take him back in, but Justin is seriously injured due to the decompression, and put in stasis.
Weir seems unshaken by the events. With only 4 hours of breathable air left, Miller demands answers from Weir about what is causing the manifestations and Justin's behavior, but Weir doesn't know, nor does he have any idea where the ship exactly went and stayed for the past 7 years.
Miller leaves and experiences more hallucinations, hearing cries for help. Miller talks to D. It appears that the Event Horizon has returned with a supernatural presence that is using its occupants' personal torments against them.
The scrambled video log is suddenly reconstructed; to the crew's horror, it shows the original crew engaging in a frenzy of torture, self-mutilation, cannibalism and sodomy, minutes after activating the gravity drive.
The ship's senior officer, Cpt. Kilpack Peter Marinker , is seen uttering the Latin message while holding his own eyes in his hands.
With the Lewis and Clark now repaired by Smith and Cooper, Miller decides to abandon the Horizon immediately and destroy it, despite the strong objections of Weir.
Miller threatens to leave Weir on the ship if he doesn't come home, but Weir says that he is "already home", and leaves. Smith and Peters prepare to evacuate by collecting all the Event Horizon's remaining oxygen filters at the gravity core.
Smith leaves as quickly as possible, but Peters is lured back in when she sees her son again. She follows him to the upper level, and is led to her death by plummeting down a shaft as a result of being tricked by the manifestation of her son.
Weir, having abandoned the crew and arriving at the core, discovers her body. He suddenly sees a vision of his wife, who committed suicide in her bathtub because she was lonely and he was never around.
Stricken by grief and guilt, Weir is compelled by her reanimated form to return to the "hell dimension", and tears out his own eyes.
Miller is inspecting the main corridor when he notices one of the explosives missing. He warns Smith over the com to be on the lookout for Weir.
Smith, who is aboard the Lewis and Clark, checks the hold and sees Weir leaving. Suspecting that Weir may have put the bomb aboard the Clark, he feverishly tries to save his ship, but finds the bomb with only a few seconds left on the counter.
Just as Miller arrives near the docking port, the Clark explodes, killing Smith and causing Cooper, who was still outside on the ship's hull, to be thrown into space.
Miller grabs one of the bolt guns used to repair the Clark, and warns D. However, Weir gets the drop on D. Miller arrives at the medical facility and finds D.
He continues to look for Starck, finding her unconscious on the bridge. He leaves the gun, but discovers that Weir is waiting there for him as well.
Seemingly possessed by the evil presence on board and without eyes, Weir threatens them with the bolt gun, saying the ship became "alive" when it went to a dimension of "pure chaos, pure evil".
Cooper, having used his space suit's oxygen to propel him back to the ship, emerges outside one of the windows, prompting Weir to shoot it.
The bridge rapidly decompresses, and Weir is sucked into space, while Miller and Starck can barely hold on, escaping from the bridge before it is sealed.
With Cooper back on board, the three survivors decide to implement the emergency plan by blowing up the ship's corridor and using its forward section as escape vessel.
Starck and Cooper start making preparations in the forward section, when the stasis tank is suddenly filled with blood and ruptures, flooding them with a tsunami of blood.
Miller arms all of the explosives in the central corridor and recovers the detonator for them, but he is suddenly confronted by the burning manifestation of his former comrade, and is forced to escape into the ship's gravity core.
Inside the core, Miller again sees the vision of his comrade, which then changes into a scarred Dr.
Weir with eyes restored. Weir explains that the ship saved him and pulled him back inside. In realistic stellar black holes , spaghettification occurs early: tidal forces tear materials apart well before the event horizon.
